Toothache: what to note and when to seek help
Tooth pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Its location, duration and triggers can help a dentist decide what to check, but similar symptoms can have different causes.
When waiting is not the next step
Swelling around the eye or neck, or swelling that interferes with breathing, swallowing or speaking, needs emergency medical help. Do not wait for a chat reply. In the EU, call 112 for an emergency; elsewhere use the local emergency number.
When to contact a dentist
Arrange dental care if pain lasts longer than two days, persists despite pain relief, or comes with fever, pain on biting, a bad taste or cheek swelling. Severe or worsening symptoms warrant prompt advice. Possible explanations include decay, a damaged tooth or filling, infection, gum problems or grinding. A dental examination is needed to distinguish them.
While you arrange care
Choose soft food, avoid chewing on the painful area and avoid foods or drinks that trigger discomfort. Ask a pharmacist about pain relief suitable for you. This does not treat the underlying cause.
Make your call more useful
Before phoning, write a brief timeline: when the pain began, whether it is constant or triggered, where you feel it and what has changed. Explain any swelling or difficulty eating at the start of the call. Keep a list of medicines and recent dental treatment ready for the clinician; there is no need to send identifying information to this website.
Questions to take to your appointment
- How soon should I be examined based on these symptoms?
- What should I do if symptoms change before the appointment?
- What will the examination cost, and is treatment included?
Write down the answers in your own words and ask the practice to clarify anything unclear.
