Planning your visit

Dental treatment costs: how to compare a written quote

There is no single European price for a filling, crown or root canal. A useful comparison begins with a specific treatment plan, your country and whether you are using public, private or insured care.

Compare equivalent treatment plans

Ask each practice to name the procedure, tooth or area being treated, materials, number of visits and what is excluded. Check whether examination, imaging, temporary work, final restoration and follow-up are separate items. Two totals can describe quite different services.

Public charges are location-specific

For example, NHS dental charges in England use treatment bands and eligibility rules, as described on the NHS website. Those rules should not be assumed to apply elsewhere in the UK or Europe. Check the official local source and your provider’s written estimate rather than relying on an AI-generated price.

Separate a quote from an illustration

An online price range is not an assessment of what you need. Ask how long a quote is valid, which findings could change it and whether your approval is needed before additional work. If using insurance, confirm cover directly with the insurer and ask about exclusions and any pre-authorisation requirements.

A checklist to take to the practice

Create a note with four columns: proposed procedure, included items, excluded items and questions. Keep the clinical recommendation alongside the price so that a cheaper offer does not obscure a difference in treatment. Ask for explanations of unfamiliar terms and enough time to understand your options.

Questions to take to your appointment

  • Does this total include all planned stages and the final restoration?
  • Which costs could change after examination or imaging?
  • Are payment terms, cancellation terms and follow-up charges available in writing?

Write down the answers in your own words and ask the practice to clarify anything unclear.
